This sampler kicks ass!

It has a very good sound-quality, 64 voices, standard 4 outputs, standard SCSI-interface, can handle 128 MB ram with standard simms… I esepcially like the filters (lowpass 12/24dB with resonance, highpass 12/24dB with resonance, bandpass and bandeliminate). All samples have their own (very strong, good sounding) filter (with gain to overdrive the filterinput) and 1band EQ. The effect-section also is very good, with 3 independand effect-units each with 54 effects (chorus, reverbs, echo’s, overdrives, flangers, distortions, wahwah’s etc.). Can be used serial or parallel. All parameters of effects can be changed. Very flexible modulation-matrixes, you can control lot’s of parameters (cut-off, resonance, envelopes, loop-points, panning etc.etc. even effect-parameters) in realtime with MIDI-controllers or the realtime-controlknobs. You can resample sounds through the effects to save effect-units. The A3000 can also be used as an independand multieffect-unit, because the audio-input can be routed directly through the effect-section. Has lo-fi (5 /11/22 KHz) sample-settings for raw sounds. Realtime beat/pitch-change function for realtime time-stretching/pitch-changing! And it is so cheap for what it offers, there is no competition at this moment. Only problem with current OS (1.10a) is a timing-bug: if the A3000 receives lots of MIDI- and controller-data it’s MIDI-buffer will overflow. Never had this in my music-making practice though… Has very fast envelope-generators for real kicking basses and drumsounds. Nice is the expand-setting, which makes a mono-sample into a wide fat pseudo-stereo sample. 4 band EQ for the stereo-out. It really is a synth/sampler because it also has some basic waveforms in memory when you start up (sine, square, pulse, triangle etc.) I definately like it!

The Guitar System.
The SGX 2000 Express is a guitar system. Technologically so far ahead of everything on the market, the Express caused the whole industry to take a closer look at what they’ve previously called guitar processors.
ART integrated the absolute best in signal processing, an incredible preamp, a straight-forward user friendly package, and all the routing options one could ever need into the 2000 Express, placing it into a class of its own. Often imitated, but never duplicated, nothing competes with the SGX 2000 Express!
Programmable Preamps. When designing the 2000 Express, our engineers researched and designed a tube preamp circuit that rivals the most classic of vintage tube amps. The result is a sound that is warm, yet brilliant, and breathes the way only a tube amp can. The SGX 2000 Express offers 8 variations of the Tube and the Solid State circuits that have their own unique sound. Choose Tube only or Solid State only, and for maximum gain, run through both preamps by selecting a stacked option. Tone, gain and output are all adjustable. A Tube Contour control, located on the front panel, adjusts the tube’s tonal characteristics. There’s no need to use a speaker simulator or any other “special” black box when running the SGX directly into a console. The preamp design is so precise you’ll swear the guitar is mic’d.
Analog Effects. All analog effects can be used simultaneously or individually in a preset. Analog effects are completely programmable and independent of each other.
Analog effects include:
  • Compression
  • Expansion
  • Distortion
  • Exciter
  • Envelope Filter
  • Noise Gate
  • 7-Band Graphic Equalizer
  • Effects Crossover
  • Programmable Level
ART’s engineers are players. Long before ART was known as a leader in signal processing, these same engineers were responsible for creating the best sounding and most widely used analog effect pedals ever on the market. Even today the original pedals are sought-after for their remarkable sound. It’s only natural that ART combines the absolute best of analog design with the leading edge of digital technology. We’ve created both.
4 Bit Digital Effects. Unlike other processors that limit you to a pre-determined number of effect chains, the SGX 2000 Express accomplishes preset construction by adding or deleting individual effects. After adding an effect, the processor displays the remaining effects available for use in that preset. This unique and simple system provides for almost unlimited combinations of effects. Full programmability of digital effects is provided.
An example of digital parameters includes:

  • Type (Hall, Room, Plate, Vocal, Off)
  • In (Pre or Post Delay)
  • Decay (0.1 to 25 sec)
  • High Freq. Damping (0 to 50%)
  • Position (Front to Rear)
  • Diffusion (40 to 100%)
  • Output Level
    Stereo Delay:

  • Delay Left (0 to 1.3sec)
  • Left Fine (0 to 50ms in 1% increments)
  • Delay Right (0 to 1.3 sec)
  • Right Fine (0 to 50ms in 1% increments)
  • Regeneration (0 to 100%)
  • High Freq. Damping (0 to 100%)
  • Output Level
Four Banks of Presets. There are 200 memory locations in the SGX 2000 Express. The 475 factory presets are retained in four memory banks: A-Classic, B-Performance, C-Production, D-Contribution. Bank selection is accomplished while in Utility Mode. When a bank is selected, factory presets are loaded into locations from 001 up. When a user writes over a factory preset or creates a preset in a blank location, the letter “U” (for User) is displayed in that same bank designation location of the LCD. All 200 memory locations are considered User locations. Users are encouraged to store their presets starting at location 200 and work downward, as user presets take precedence over factory presets. A user preset is automatically present in all banks. The Express’ factory presets are among the finest in the industry. A wide range of guitars with hum bucking, single coil, passive and active pickups were used in preset development. The type of pickup used to create the preset and the sound of the preset are listed in the manual. Presets are developed with the Express plugged directly into a console and into a power amp running stereo cabinets.
A Programmable Patchbay. If you ever wanted to patch something into your 2000 Express, you have the choice of two effects loops: one mono, one stereo. The mono loop is located between the analog and digital sections, and the stereo loop is located between the digital effect section and the main output. The status of the effects loops is programmable, switchable via MIDI, and, in keeping with the SGX’s design philosophy, may be manually overridden by pressing the Efx Loop Master Override switches on the front panel.
Editing Parameters and Values ART processors possess the most user-friendly editing interfaces on the market. The SGX 2000 Express is no exception. Preset, Parameter, Value adjustment and Mix parameters are instantly accessible with a press of a button and a turn of the Encoder.
    To edit a parameter:

  • Press the Parameter (Param) button.
  • Turn the Encoder to the parameter you wish to adjust.
  • Press the Value button.
  • Turn the Encoder to change the value.
  • Press Store to save the changes, or Preset to return to preset mode.
Connections. The SGX 2000 Express provides a front panel instrument input and rear panel stereo line inputs. Outputs include: stereo line outputs, balanced XLR line outputs, and a -10dB instrument output, all of which can be used simultaneously. Headphone outputs are located on the front and rear panels. MIDI In, Out and Thru are included.
Performance MIDI. Performance MIDI is a trademarked name for the simplest MIDI interface in the world. MIDI controls are displayed in a readable fashion and all commands are written in English so it is easy to understand what is happening within the system. What makes the SGX 2000 Express even more powerful is its ability to control effect parameters in real-time. With an X-15 Ultrafoot, up to eight parameters can be varied per preset, and effects that are present in that preset can be tur ned off and on just like they were a series of stomp boxes! Real-Time MIDI allows for raising and lowering of individual effect levels, fading in effects, adding distortion gain, and changing mix levels (all foot controlled!). All necessary programming is done in the Express, and it’s as simple as adding and editing an effect!
I nedenstående en brugers detaljeret beskrivelse:
ART entitles the SGX-2000 as a “Tube Preamp/Guitar Effects System”. In my opinion this description is kind of an understatement. Actually I’d say it is a “Fully Programmable Guitar Tube/Solid State Preamp combined with a Fully Programmable Multi Effects Unit”. For a detailed product description of this unit please refer to the official product page for the SGX-2000 Express, which is maintained by ART.
The SGX-2000 Express is the successor of the SGX-2000. Owners of an SGX-2000 are able turn their unit into the Express version by replacing the original processor with the upgraded new version.
Both versions of the SGX-2000 are (unfortunately) discontinued products. I’m not the only one who believes that the SGX-2000 was a unit far ahead of it’s competitors when it came out. Well, today there may be even more flexible and cheaper products available. But if ART had continued its development of the SGX-2000 series I’m sure they would play an important role in the market today. I never got to know why they stopped this series. If anybody knows please let me know.
The look of the SGX-2000 has changed dramatically after the Express model has been released. In the beginning the unit had a pretty colorful look mainly dominated by pink strokes of a brush. Later they decided to give the unit an elegant black look. A picture of the black Express model can be found at the top of this page.
I bought my SGX-2000 in 1991 and it was the very first model the shop has received ever. In 1998 I read that there’s the opportunity to upgrade it to the Express model. No sooner read than done!
Note: Information on how to find out which software version your SGX-2000 has (i.e. if it is an Express already) and how to get the upgrade to the Express version can be found at ART’s homepage. When I tried to install the upgrade by myself I ran into deep trouble since the upgrade chip has 4 more pins than the old socket. I tried to replace the socket with one that was capable of hosting the new processor. During that task something broke and so I had to send the unit to ART at the end… It was a very expensive repair so you better check that the socket in your unit can take the required number of pins. The people at ART will tell you how many are required. If your unit doesn’t have the proper socket you should consider sending your SGX-2000 to ART right away and let them do the upgrade. It’ll be much cheaper and more reliable. 😉
By the way: I’m using my SGX-2000 in my band MOTYPE. We play Thrash Metal and therefore I’ve been trying to get the ultra hardest metal sound from my unit right from the beginning. This was kind of a challenge for me, because very soon I had to realize that the SGX-2000 has some limitations in terms of “gain”. The upgrade to the Express version might have improved this to some extend, but nevertheless you need some patience in order to get a kickin’ metal distortion from your SGX-2000… After all these years I’ve found a sound that I like very much. On my band’s homepage at you can get an impression about my main SGX-2000 sound: there are most of our songs available for download as MP3 files in full length and high quality and as short samples in mono quality.

The “Vintage” Edition

You’ve never seen one of the very early models of the SGX-2000? So I have some nice pictures for you! 😉
Let’s call this first edition “The Vintage Edition”. Well, the mechanical construction as well as the location of any knob, pushbutton, LED etc. has never changed; not even for the latest SGX-2000 Express in its elegant black outfit!
The first outfit was based of a kind of “pop art” graphics. Below you can see a picture of such a unit. There are three detail pictures of the left, middle and right part of the front panel. View them by simply clicking on the corresponding area in the picture below.
